Boston Latin School was founded on April 23, 1635. The February 13 date is a mistaken reading of the town records, which indicate the 13th day of the 2nd month. Since England and the American colonies did not adopt the Gregorian calendar with the rest of Europe in 1582, but waited until 1752, the Julian calendar was still in effect in 1635. March was the 1st and April the 2nd month. In 1752 10 days had to be dropped to match the calendars; hence the 13th became the 23rd when all the dates between 1582 1nd 1753 were sdjusted.
