a few observations

I thought it was a good thing for Obama to meet with Republicans and take their questions. While many pundits called this Obama in the lion's den, it reminded me more of Christ going to the temple.
In order for our country to survive, we have to work together. It's not enough to have the votes to pass or block something. That kind of control only allows one group to get its way.
What is really necessary for us is for all sides to work in concert to make the world better. That occasionally means moving a little off your position so all sides can come together to move forward.
As several of us often told a particular congressman we worked for: "What difference does it make if your position is right when you are the only person standing in the room?"
I hope that Obama cntinues to reach out to Republicans and tea baggers and everyone else to find plans that work to restore our nation and our world.
I also hope that these opposition groups have the courage to let their desire for what's best for us to move ahead of their pride and "my way or the highway" attitude.
We all have to play together in this sandbox. If we don't , the sand will fly and we'll be left with nothing.

I am remembering one of the greatest spiritual leaders of all time today. Gandhi was a master practicioner of non-violence. Martin Luther King, Jr. took Gandhi's ideas and turned them into the Civil Right's Movement of the 50's and 60's.
Gandhi's spiritula influence cannot be over simplified. He refused to let creed or religious ideology get int e way of reminding everyone that regardles of race or creed or religious beliefs, we are all children of God.
He may have expressed this thought best when he said "One's own religion is after all a matter between oneself and one's Maker and no one else's."
How true. So many of us get caught up in the belief that our way of faith is the only true way, that all others are false and must be brought into our fold, lest their souls be lost.
How arrogant of any man to say that his or her way to God is the only way.
The sad part is so many chuches and faiths spend most of their time not feeding the poor, healing the sick, taking care of those who cannot care for themselves; instead they spend untold riches building monuments not to God, but to their particular faith. From the way churches build, you'd think the only way to God is through a building - the bigger the better.
There are two examples of churches living over their menas right now - Rick Warren's Sadleback Church and Robert Schuller's church in LA.
Both have massive debt and are cutting back programs and laying off people to staunch the flow of red ink.
If we spent more time and money caring for our fellow man instead of fighting each other like Crusaders, our world would be in a better place.

I'm waiting patiently for my iPad. If it's Apple, I want it. I love my iPhone (most of the time) and love my laptop.
As someone who was an Apple employee when Jobs was CEO and when Scully took over I can say the Jobs years were the most exciting and productive.
Thinking and evangelizing and innovating were the top priority.
Thank God we have people like Jobs who continue to think and dream and execute their dreams.
Just think of the great things that could be accomplished if more companies encouraged people like Jobs.
We have become a nation of the status quo. Imagine what would happen if we lsited to Jobs. His inspiration and "go do it" attitude could be the spark to bring the US into another Golden Age.
We need more leaders like Jobs.

The State of Our Union - a HouseDivided
It’s not going well folks. We are a nation divided. Not only that, we want to be divided.
During the President’s speech the blog universe was full of nasty hateful things about Obama and “the opposition”.
We had leaders and commentators from the right and the left call him a liar, arrogant, aloof and more.
Where is Rodney King when you need him?
Can’t we all just get along?
It's time for Olbermann, Beck, Limbaugh, Schlutz, Malkin, Hannity and the rest to shut up. You are causing more problems than you solve. You are helping to create the climate that is keeping our country spead out into little armed camps ready to do battle against "the enemy".
It seems today that we are more interested in blocking progress than making it, more interested in tearing the other guy down than building him up and more interested in the salacious, the sordid, the sleazy than in the truth.
We don’t want meaningful discussion about issues so we shout down those who don’t agree with us. We call them names. We distort facts or outright lie about them to fit our particular mindset. We all live by one motto - My Way or the Highway
We all have our little comfort group, made up of people who believe exactly like us. We don’t like diversity within our group - if you don’t believe exactly as I do, I will destroy you. Politics, religion, the subject doesn’t matter. We refuse to consider another opinion, refuse to admit we might be wrong or that someone else has a better idea.
Our leaders - and I call them that knowing they aren’t - spend more time name calling, posturing and working the angles to get more power than they do trying to make things better.
We’ve become an angry, surly nation of whiners and pompous, self absorbed, self centered louts.
Our country is broken. Instead of rolling up or collective sleeves and getting together to fix it, we’d rather point fingers and blame the other guy.
We have serious problems to solve: a falling economy, how to create more and better paying jobs, how to make sure everyone gets healthcare, how to defend our nation against it's real enemies, how to give our children the best education possible, how to encourage innovation and invention.... the lsit goes on.
Are we tackling these problems? No, we're in a giant pissing match with ourselves.
There’s plenty of blame to go around. Democrats, Republicans, right wing, left wing, middle of the roaders, we are all to blame for the mess we our country has become.
Does Obama have all the answers? No
Do Democrats? Republicans? Christians? Blacks? Whites? Hispanics?
No.
It’s time for us to stop playing around. We need to work together to get America back on track.
Working together means putting aside the “my way or the highway” attitude and work together to achieve what’s best for all of us, not just your little tribe.
Cooperation, communication and compromise will save us.
If we don’t fix this now, America will become a nation made up of little self interest groups. Nothing will get done, nothing will change and we will slide into our own sewage.
Lincoln said it best:

The cracks in our foundation are getting bigger. We had better heed his warning before it’s too late.

Term Limits for Dummies - It's Called Voting

Oklahoma already has Term Limits. Elections. You may have heard about them. It's in all the papers and on the TV news when it's time to vote. You may also see a dearth of mail form candidates or various groups pushing their position.
Call elections Term Limits for dummies. All you have to do is register one time and then show up on election day to vote.
It's not as easy as having some law do the dirty work for you but you do get the personal satisfaction of participating in the electoral process.
If you want someone out of office, vote them out.
On the other hand, if one district or state wants some bozo to be their representative and continue to elect that person, so be it. That's how our state and our Republic works.
As you can see from our own state government, most term limited officials find a new office to run for. All that Term Limits has accoplished is shuffling a full time elected official from one office to the other.
Term Limits also forces out of office the good public servants who have the institutional knowledge to keep things moving and to teach the new kids on the block how things work.
If Oklahomans would only get half as excited about elections and state government as they do about OU and OSU football, we wouldn't have a problem with ner-do-well elected officials and their inattention to the problems of our state.
Voters only have themselves to blame for bad public servants, bad laws, too many taxes and all the other things government does that people profess not to like.

We The People Are Responsible for Our Crappy Government

Term limits solve nothing. As long as the public refues to become informed about candidates, as long as people refuse to vote and as long as the electorate refuse to actively participate in the political process, we will continue to have sub standard elected officials.
It's our own fault we are in this mess because the electorate prefers to act like sheep - blindly following any candidate who tells them what they want to hear or looks good on TV.
Our society cares more about personalities - celebriticians - than they do candidates who actually have a reasoned thought in their head.
Add to that the distate so many on the far right and left have with the words "work together for the common good" and "compromise", we will continue to sink into the muck and mire of a second rate country.
We have the opportunity to change th American political landscape for the better. We're just to lazy and don't have the guts to do it.
And that my friends, is why our government is run by the corrupt, arrogant politicians and government officials who forget that they serve us.
We only get the government we ask for and you're now looking at the results.
Democrats and Republicans and Independents all share equal blame for the sorry state of our system of government.

Pray for Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh

We need to pray for Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh
These are two very lost souls. The bile, the hatred, the downright judgmental meanness and nastiness that comes out of the mouths of these two year after year never ceases to amaze me.
I’m not sure who deserves my pity more - these two or the million so people who blindly support their rantings and ravings day after day.
In Roberson’s case, how can he call himself a man of God when he consistently fails to practice the basic tenants of his alleged faith? Did you ever actually READ the Bible Pat? It’s full of do unto others and care for your fellow man and lots of compassionate God commandments.
As for Limbaugh, it’s sad to listen to him. The hated, the nasty, snaky comments about everyone and every thing may be entertaining to the “in your face crowd” but the comments grow increasingly mean spirited and vile.
The Dalai Lama puts it best with this thought:
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”
Robertson and Limbaugh have no compassion, no love, no humanity.
They are lost souls.
They deserve our compassion and our love.
So when you’re praying, take an extra minute and pray for Limbaugh and Robertson.
They need our prayer as much as the people of Haiti.

Pat Roberson - God's Embarassment on Earth

Where to begin.
Pat Robertson's comments about the cause of Haiti's earchquake must leave even his staunchest fans wondering about his sanity.
It's sad enought that he atributes every natural disaster to "God's wrath" on some poor unsuspecting people (Katrina and 9-11 are good examples).
What is even sadder is that his ministry took in over $450 million last year. That means a lot of people around the world actually buy his wacky brand of Christianity.
Not that Robertson acts much like a Christian minister. I think of him more as the Bily Mayes of Christian broadcasting - a hukster who will say anything for attention and viewers.
Where is his compassion? Why isn't he in Haiti feeding the hungry, clothing the poor and healing the sick and injured?
Isn't that what Christ told his followers to do?
Why doesn't he obey Jesus' comand to "love thy neighbor as thyself".
If Christians wonder why they and their faith get such a bad rap they have no farther to look than the cable channel carrying Robertson's 700 Club.
Here you can watch a supposed man of the cloth waxing poetically about how God is punishing Haitians, which vitamins to take, how to eat better, skreeds on government and politics, "news" of the day and a host of other topics.
Perhaps Robertson is just trying to be the Oprah of Christian television.
He also makes sure you hear the pitch to donate money via is telethons.
What you don't hear a lot of is preaching the word of God - his show is more like a combo of QVC, Glenn Beck and Oprah.

Sarah Palin made her debut on Fox News last night - I wonder, will she quit before the end of her contract?

It's about time Congress put the fire to the feet of the bankers us taxpayers bailed out not so long ago.
Record profits, record bonuses for bankers, increased banking fees, increased credit card interest rates and making it more difficult to get a mortgage or get a re-finance should send a loud and clear message to the American people - "thanks for the cash, now take a hike".
No one should begrudge someone making a profit. But to gouge the taxpayers after we saved their asses from their own mistakes is intollerable.
It's time for Congress to grow a pair and slap some new banking regs on that userous industry.

I see the Oklahoma media is making a big deal out of the state Geological Survey equipment picking up the Haiti earthquake.
I'd be more concerned if it didn't pick it up.

Smelling blood in the water, national and state Republicans are moving in for the kill in Massachusetts. What better way to rally state and national Republicans than by taking Ted Kennedy's Senate seat.
If the Repubs pull this off, look for a massive GOTV and fundraising across the nation. With the Democratic Party in disarray, losing Kennedy's seat could be the start of a domino effect across the country.

If it weren't so funny it would be sad: The People's Mujahadeen - a terrorist organization according to the US - is suing the US, claiming it is no longer a terrorist organization.
Will they be handled by a public defender?
Is there a defense fund being set up for their legal fees?

get ready for a big education fight in Texas. The Lone Star state is debating how history should be taught in public schools.
As you would expect, the major stumbling block is conservative Christians. They want the Founding Fathers portrayed as Chirstians wanting to set up a Christian country.
That the facts disprove their claim seems irrelevant. While some were no dount Christians, others were Diests. Still others, like a lot of people, believes but not to fanatical about it.
What always gives Christians a bad name and bad PR is this neverending attempt by conservative Christians to "prove" they're right on every issue. They just can't stand the fact that not everyone beleives the way they do.
Personally I don't care what they believe. I just don't want them forcing their religious beliefs on me.

Why I Drive a "Foreigh" Car

While driving around town today I heard one of the heads of the Big Three Automakers - didn't catch his name - comment that it was about time Government leaders came to the Detroit Auto Show and paid attention to Detroit. He also commented that with all the BMW's. Merc's, Acura's and Lexus' being driven by politicans, Detroit was becoming the bastard stepchild of the world auto industry (my interpretation of his remarks).
Here's why I, and so many others, drive a "forgeign" car - it's an Acura (built in the US)- my third. These experiences are just mine but from what I've heard from others, about par for the course.
1 - 1974 Pinto - bought it new, it died before hitting 65,000 miles
2 - 1988 Ford Taurus Station Wagon - just plain wore out at 96,000 miles
3 - 1996 Ford Ranger pickup - replaces the transmission twice, the air conditioning unit, the power steering unit and the starter before hitting 120,000 miles
4 - 1994 Jeep - need i say more? It leaked fluids worse than my MG's. The only difference is that the MG's actually ran more than they were in the shop. Among the things replaced - motor mounts, starter, injector system, computer and fan.
My last two Acura's each had over 200,000 miles on them when traded in for a newer model. The biggest repair to either was a head gasket on #2 at 152,000 miles. The current Acura has 106,000 miles and runs like a top.
If Detroit wants me as a customer, they need to create a reliable car that looks good (remember the Aztec?).
Having said that, I would consider a Ford product the next time I'm ready to buy. They seem to have their act together. As for GM and Chrysler - if you can't make a reliable, good looking product that people want to buy, don't bitch when you go under. That's part of our free market economy.

The Week That Was

You have to wonder what the present and previous administrations were thinking about terorism. First Bush and Company ignore the 9-11 Commission reports.
Then the Obama Administration does exactly what Bush did in his first year - ignore terrorism.
Now everyone is up in arms about the Tighty Whitey bomber.
It's time for the people responsible for implimenting the 9-11 report and for connecting the dots of terrorism intel to be held accountable.
We can't stop every attack but we can get rid of those who aren't doing their best to make us safe.

Lots of people keep sending me teabagger meeting notices for upcoming events.
These teabaggers are all over the map when it comes to what they want. As near as I can tell, they're against all sorts of stuff but have no plans for what to do to make things better.
You can't just be against something, you have to be for something. If you think the systetem is broken, show me how you are going to fix it.
So far, the teabaggers are all talk, no action and worst of all, no plan.

Brit Hume is an Ass

If Christians wonder why they get bad press, one needs to look no farther than Brit Hume. The so called "dean" of FOX News says Tiger Woods needs to dump his Buddhist faith and become a Christian because the only way for Woods to fully rehab himself is to convert to Christianity.
Let's first realize that Hume has no clue about Buddhism. If he did he would know it's a philosophy that people of many faiths practice.
And who says being a Christian is the answer? What makes them an y more special than those of other faiths?
I'm always surprised by the intollerence of many Christians when it comes to people of other religions or even other denominations. The attitude seems to be; only my faith is God's, everyone else is wrong.

Let's first realize that Hume has no clue about Buddhism. If he did he would know it's a philosophy that people of many faiths practice.
And who says being a Christian is the answer? What makes them an y more special than those of other faiths?

While blasting the Obama Administration for not having a head of the TSA, DeMint is currently blocking the Obama appointment in committee.
Why?
He's afraid the nominee, Erroll Southers, will allow the TSA to unionize. No matter that The Border Patrol, most police departments, fire departments and the like are unionized.
So he's upset becase their is no head of TSA and blocking the man appointed to fill the position.
I thought South Carolina already had a village idiot with their Governor, Mark Sanford.
I guess DeMint is auditioning for the part when Sanford leaves office.

Duh.
But here's the deal. We can either take on every Taliban and Al Quaeda outpost in the world or we can start trying to mitigate the circumstances that make them powerful.
Spend money to make war or bring peace.
it should be a no brainer but not to the chciken hawks on the right.
So let's do it, let's formally declare war on Al Quaeda and the Taliban.
In order to do that effectively we have to invade/bomb their locations. Those include: Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Phillipines, Indonesia (all 3000 islands), Syria, Lebanon, parts of the former Soviet Union..... get the idea?
Do you think we'll blow them all to hell or have another world war? World war is the correct answer.
Now after we do that, I want mandatory front line military service for every single person who supports this kind of war... that includes all the chicken hawsk like Dick Cheney, Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Lieberman and the rest.

Civil Disobedience
I heartily accept the motto, — “That government is best which governs least”; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe — “That government is best which governs not at all”; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient. The objections which have been brought against a standing army, and they are many and weighty, and deserve to prevail, may also at last be brought against a standing government. The standing army is only an arm of the standing government. The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it. Witness the present Mexican war, the work of comparatively a few individuals using the standing government as their tool; for in the outset, the people would not have consented to this measure.
This American government — what is it but a tradition, though a recent one, endeavoring to transmit itself unimpaired to posterity, but each instant losing some of its integrity? It has not the vitality and force of a single living man; for a single man can bend it to his will. It is a sort of wooden gun to the people themselves. But it is not the less necessary for this; for the people must have some complicated machinery or other, and hear its din, to satisfy that idea of government which they have. Governments show thus how successfully men can be imposed upon, even impose on themselves, for their own advantage. It is excellent, we must all allow. Yet this government never of itself furthered any enterprise, but by the alacrity with which it got out of its way. It does not keep the country free. It does not settle the West. It does not educate. The character inherent in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got in its way. For government is an expedient, by which men would fain succeed in letting one another alone; and, as has been said, when it is most expedient, the governed are most let alone by it. Trade and commerce, if they were not made of india-rubber, would never manage to bounce over obstacles which legislators are continually putting in their way; and if one were to judge these men wholly by the effects of their actions and not partly by their intentions, they would deserve to be classed and punished with those mischievous persons who put obstructions on the railroads.
But, to speak practically and as a citizen, unlike those who call themselves no-government men, I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it.
After all, the practical reason why, when the power is once in the hands of the people, a majority are permitted, and for a long period continue, to rule is not because they are most likely to be in the right, nor because this seems fairest to the minority, but because they are physically the strongest. But government in which the majority rule in all cases cannot be based on justice, even as far as men understand it. Can there not be a government in which the majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but conscience? — in which majorities decide only those questions to which the rule of expediency is applicable? Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right. It is truly enough said that a corporation has no conscience; but a corporation of conscientious men is a corporation with a conscience. Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice. A common and natural result of an undue respect for the law is, that you may see a file of soldiers, colonel, captain, corporal, privates, powder-monkeys, and all, marching in admirable order over hill and dale to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and consciences, which makes it very steep marching indeed, and produces a palpitation of the heart. They have no doubt that it is a damnable business in which they are concerned; they are all peaceably inclined. Now, what are they? Men at all? or small movable forts and magazines, at the service of some unscrupulous man in power? Visit the Navy Yard, and behold a marine, such a man as an American government can make, or such as it can make a man with its black arts — a mere shadow and reminiscence of humanity, a man laid out alive and standing, and already, as one may say, buried under arms with funeral accompaniment, though it may be,
“Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note,
As his corse to the rampart we hurried;
Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot
O’er the grave where our hero was buried.”
The mass of men serve the state thus, not as men mainly, but as machines, with their bodies. They are the standing army, and the militia, jailers, constables, posse comitatus, etc. In most cases there is no free exercise whatever of the judgment or of the moral sense; but they put themselves on a level with wood and earth and stones; and wooden men can perhaps be manufactured that will serve the purpose as well. Such command no more respect than men of straw or a lump of dirt. They have the same sort of worth only as horses and dogs. Yet such as these even are commonly esteemed good citizens. Others — as most legislators, politicians, lawyers, ministers, and office-holders — serve the state chiefly with their heads; and, as they rarely make any moral distinctions, they are as likely to serve the devil, without intending it, as God. A very few — as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men — serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it. A wise man will only be useful as a man, and will not submit to be “clay,” and “stop a hole to keep the wind away,” but leave that office to his dust at least:
“I am too high-born to be propertied,
To be a second at control,
Or useful serving-man and instrument
To any sovereign state throughout the world.”
He who gives himself entirely to his fellow men appears to them useless and selfish; but he who gives himself partially to them is pronounced a benefactor and philanthropist.
How does it become a man to behave toward the American government today? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slave’s government also.
All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its inefficiency are great and unendurable. But almost all say that such is not the case now. But such was the case, they think, in the Revolution of ‘75. If one were to tell me that this was a bad government because it taxed certain foreign commodities brought to its ports, it is most probable that I should not make an ado about it, for I can do without them. All machines have their friction; and possibly this does enough good to counter-balance the evil. At any rate, it is a great evil to make a stir about it. But when the friction comes to have its machine, and oppression and robbery are organized, I say, let us not have such a machine any longer. In other words, when a sixth of the population of a nation which has undertaken to be the refuge of liberty are slaves, and a whole country is unjustly overrun and conquered by a foreign army, and subjected to military law, I think that it is not too soon for honest men to rebel and revolutionize. What makes this duty the more urgent is that fact that the country so overrun is not our own, but ours is the invading army.

What is even sadder is the number of people who believe her lies and repeat them as the truth even when she's proved to be wrong.

We habitually erect a barrier called blame that keeps us from communicating genuinely with others, and we fortify it with our concepts of who's right and who's wrong. We do that with the people who are closest to us and we do it with political systems, with all kinds of things that we don't like about our associates or our society. It is a very common, ancient, well-perfected device for trying to feel better. Blame others. Blaming is a way to protect your heart, trying to protect what is soft and open and tender in yourself. Rather than own that pain, we scramble to find some comfortable ground.

This year, forget the hopeless resolutions. No one is going to diet seriously when it's freezing outside and the only relief is a large piece of cake. No one is going to go running everyday at 6 a.m. when it's still dark and icicles are forming at the tip of your nose. Make the resolution that really matters, that you can really keep.
Commit yourself to daily acts of kindness directed to others. Maybe next year, on the last Shabbat of the year, you won't have to search hard to answer what the nicest thing that you did for someone was in 2010.
And maybe, in thinking hard about an inventory of kindness this year, you'll also remember the nicest thing that someone did for you. Kindness: Pass it on.
