The National Republican "Leaderless-ship" is cracking me up these days.
As their party finds its membership rapidly dwindling, hovering just above the KKK, The American Nazi Party, The Green Party and probably neck and neck with Libertarians; it's good to see their leaders suddenly worried about checks and balances in government.
Now these were the same folks who, during the reign of King George W, who rammed, slammed, and jammed their legislation, policies and version of the way the world should be ideology without regard to "the other party's" thoughts or concerns.
The Republican message has been, and continues to be "Our way or the highway".
So I'm sitting here reading my Sunday NY Times and bust out laughing because Mitch McConnell and Susan Collins are worried about the lack of checks and balances because the Democrats control all three branches of the government.
Are they kidding?
I did not once hear that concern from them when King George W and the Republicans controlled all three branches of the government. To the contrary, they operated with an almost sense of glee that they controlled everything (and acted accordingly).
And when the Democrats used arcane but effective procedures like the filibuster, Republicans screamed that the Dems were obstructing the will of the people.
My how times change. It seems the Repubs are now going to use the same blocking techniques they so passionately castigated..... wait for it........ to block the Democrats' initiatives.
The Republican Party is trying to kill itself. Lately it’s been compared to the Whig Party which died a relatively peaceful death in the 18050's. That's giving them too much credit. This party is hell bent on self destruction.
I'm reminded that in many ways the current Republican Party is like the American auto industry. Auto makers were once the linchpin of the US economy.
But, over the years, they refused to modernize, adapt to changing consumer demands and the realities of a world economy. As a result, all three are floundering. Floundering because for at least the last 30 years, they've had a total absence of leadership. As one Pontiac exec said when the hideous and ghastly AZTEK was unveiled (paraphrase), "no matter what it looks like people will buy it because it's American made and we tell them to."
Pontiac is now dead. Killed by a total unwillingness on the part of GM to listen to the people and to pay attention to what's happening outside their little glass house.
You can now substitute the word Republican for the words GM or Auto Industry.
Those Republicans who are left; the die hard, my way or the highway believers - the ones who think a pure party is more important than anything else - are killing the party.
Because they want purity, they'll end up like the KKK, the White Supremacists, baseball fans and eco terrorists; a small band of loud mouthed true believers who can't get anything done because they refuse to accept the premise that they are not superior and that their beliefs are the one true way.
Republican populist Teddy Roosevelt is spinning in his grave - laughing to be sure at the folly of the current Republican Party, but spinning nevertheless.
